Motorcycle Registration in Bangladesh: Step-by-Step Guide

There are a few steps involved in registering a motorcycle in Bangladesh. You can register your motorcycle in two ways:

Through the showroom – The showroom where you purchased your motorcycle can handle the registration process for you. However, this may cost a bit more.

Do it yourself at the BRTA office – You can register the motorcycle yourself by visiting the BRTA office. This is slightly cheaper but more time-consuming and may involve more hassle.

Regardless of the method, registering your motorcycle is essential. If you prefer showroom registration, just inform them, and they will handle it for you.

What Do You Need to Register a Motorcycle?

• Application form signed by both the owner and the dealer
• VAT payment slip and tax receipt issued by the showroom
• Sonali Bank treasury receipt of VAT paid by the importer
• Sales invoice, packing list, and gate pass documents
• Customs duty payment receipt
• Photocopy of the applicant’s NID (National ID Card), attested
• Driving license (if applicable – learner’s license may be accepted in some cases, but not always required; however, it’s better to have it)
• If the motorcycle has multiple owners, a letter of consent or affidavit from all parties must be submitted to register in one person’s name
• If the motorcycle is under any bank loan or financial institution, you need a no-objection application to the authority
• Inspection report by a BRTA motor vehicle inspector
• Application fee receipt

Motorcycle Registration Fee in Bangladesh

For motorcycles with an engine capacity above 100cc, the base registration fee is BDT 3,000.

However, there are additional charges like the cost for a digital number plate, tax token, registration certificate, supplementary duty, VAT, etc., which increase the total fee.

On the other hand, for motorcycles with an engine capacity of 100cc or below, the base registration fee is BDT 2,000.

How to Register a Motorcycle After Buying?

Then go to the official BRTA website and apply online for motorcycle registration. Once you complete the application, print it out and submit it along with the required documents at the BRTA office.

How to Register a Motorcycle Online

Let’s now learn step-by-step how to register a motorcycle online. This is actually a very simple process.

Step 1: Account Registration

• To register a motorcycle online, visit the BRTA portal website.
• First, you need to create an account. To do that, click on the Registration button.

• When you click on the registration button, you’ll need to provide your NID number and date of birth.

• Then, enter your mobile number and verify it through OTP.
• After that, set up a password, and your account will be created.

Step 2: Motorcycle Registration

To proceed with motorcycle registration, log in again to the BRTA portal using your password.
Once logged in, you will see several menu options at the top. From the menu bar, go to “Motor Vehicle Registration Application.”

• Click on the option “Apply for New Motor Vehicle Registration.”

• A form related to your vehicle information will appear.

• You need to carefully fill out all the required details in this form.
• Make sure there are no mistakes while entering the information.

Refer to your motorcycle’s documents when filling out the fields to ensure everything is accurate.

Step 3: Document Submission

• Once you have completed the online registration form, print the application page.
• Attach the required documents, then submit everything to the BRTA office.

• If everything is in order, the officer will sign the file and approve the registration.
• Then, you’ll need to resubmit the approved file to the BRTA office.

Step 4: Pay the Application Fee

After applying, you must pay the motorcycle registration application fee. To pay the fee:

• Log back in to the BRTA portal using your registered account and password.
• Then select the option called “Motor Vehicle Registration Fee”.
• Now you’ll be required to enter some information about your motorcycle.

Step 5: Providing Biometrics

• For motorcycle registration, you must also provide a photo and fingerprints (biometrics).
• Even after completing the registration process, you won’t receive the smart card or digital number plate immediately. These take a few days to process.
• You will be notified via SMS on your mobile when it’s time to submit your photo and fingerprint.
• Once you receive the SMS, visit the designated center at the mentioned time and complete the biometric process.
• A few days later, you will be able to collect your motorcycle registration certificate and smart card.

Motorcycle Registration Renewal

Keep in mind that registering your motorcycle is not the end of the process.

The registration you obtain will be valid for a limited time, usually for a minimum of 2 years to a maximum of 10 years.

After this period expires, you must renew your motorcycle registration. During the renewal, the same cost as the initial registration generally applies.
